The Story of Watamu

Started in 1995, we travelled through southern and east Africa setting up groups of local craft people whose livelihood depended on carving and crafting with wood, sisal, palm and other materials gathered from their local environment. From our many endeavours we have managed to establish a number of artisanal groups, who make the majority of our product range.

These groups have become a very important part of our business and through a co-operative process have greatly benefited the local communities of the network, in the form of job creation and thereby alleviation of poverty. We work throughout Swaziland, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

We have recently started to work with people closer to home in South Africa and have established small groups of ladies doing bead work. In 2015, we started our ostrich eggshell mosaic range which has created at least eight new and sustainable jobs.

We will continue to create more groups of this kind to continually produce new and innovative products, but also to maintain lasting and sustainable networks with communities in need.

We have offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town which enable us to ship orders from both centres worldwide. Enjoy the talent of the African people.
